According to data from the Cat's Eye Professional Edition, the number of National Day slots in 2023 has exceeded 2.7 billion, and the overall growth trend is relatively good. During the National Day period, the daily box office revenue is over 200 million yuan, and the total number of viewers is 65.1 million. From the perspective of film genres, there are various types of National Day films this year, such as plot, comedy, love, animation, etc. Among them, there are also major director works such as "Rock Hard", "Volunteer Army: Heroes Attack", "Former 4: Early Marriage of the Young", or well-known IP sequels. However, some fans have also raised questions: why did the National Day season, where immortals fought in previous years, unexpectedly not see any foreign blockbusters this year. In fact, it's not just domestic films, including the previous Spring Festival and summer seasons. The most talked about blockbuster movies are also domestic films such as "All in One Place," "The Disappearing One," and "The Goddess. In addition to discussing that the volume is not as good as before, the box office of imported blockbusters represented by Hollywood in China has frequently suffered setbacks, making it curious why the once glorious overseas blockbusters are becoming less and less popular? Imported blockbuster box office hits cold, Hollywood falls to the brink? According to data from the Lighthouse Professional Edition, as of October 11, the national box office of films in 2023 was 47.8 billion yuan, with over 80% of the box office contributed by domestic films. However, the total box office of 70 imported films released this year was 8.1 billion yuan, accounting for only 16.9%. Looking back at the data of previous years, the number of imported films introduced and shown in Chinese Mainland from 2017 to 2019 was 123, 121 and 136, with an average box office of 210 million, 180 million and 178 million respectively. During the epidemic, the traditional film industry both domestically and internationally was greatly impacted, with a sharp decrease in the number of film and television works released, and a certain change in China's box office structure. In 2019 before the pandemic, imported films accounted for about 37.9% of China's box office market, while in the past two years, they have accounted for less than 20%. Entering the post pandemic market, the number of imported films from overseas has gradually returned to its previous level: the total number of imported films in 2022 was 59, while the number of imported films from January to October this year has reached 70. However, the box office performance of imported films did not meet expectations. The average box office of imported films in the first ten months of this year was only 110 million, which is the same as in 2022, but a full 100 million yuan lower than in 2017. From box office data, the box office influence of imported films has declined significantly. Office Space Blackout From the perspective of types, imported films can be roughly divided into two categories. One type is to buy fragmented films, also known as "batch films", which are purchased by domestic importers from foreign film merchants. Foreign film merchants do not participate in the Chinese box office distribution. This type of film is usually relatively small in size, and some industry insiders have revealed that the current buyout price for imported films is generally between 3 million to 30 million yuan. The other type is ledger based films, where the film copyright owner does not sell off the distribution rights, but shares the box office revenue of the films with the domestic commissioned distributors according to a predetermined proportion. These types of films are usually large-scale commercial films produced by leading Hollywood film and television companies, which are commonly referred to as Hollywood blockbusters, such as "Speed and Passion 10", "Galactic Guard 3", and "Flash Man".
